This first expedition of the new Treasure Hunting season is a simple introductory one to help you learn some of the basic concepts of Treasure Island. The pirates will use simple tactics.\n Your goal in this first expedition is to capture all of the pirates. There are 6 RED pirates against your BLUE navs (navigators) on this small island. The size of your nav team will vary depending on which pirate team your playing against. The pirates move at the same time as you do. There are no buried treasure chests in this first expedition. You have 5 minutes to win.\n If you win within 1 minute you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 2 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 5 minutes a Bronze Cup.
EXPEDITION #2\n Bring 2 out of the 3 buried treasure chests on this medium size island back to your ship (the one with BLUE flags) within 12 minutes. If you win within 6 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 8 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 12 minutes a Bronze Cup.\n The pirates are moving from their ship, so even though you don't see them, be quick to get to two of the areas where the treasure chests (marked with a red X) are buried.\n A good beginner's strategy is to move MOST of the navs to the middle red X treasure marker BEFORE digging with any of them. Remember, you dig by DOUBLE clicking on the nav you want to dig with. The treasure chest is buried adjacent to the red X. You'll be going up against a band of 10 pirates.
Expedition #3\n Bring 3 out of the 5 buried treasure chests on this medium to large size island back to your ship (the one with BLUE flags) within 20 minutes. The pirates have 11 men in their band.\n If you win within 7 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 10 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 20 minutes a Bronze Cup.\n\n You can see these expedition introductions again by selecting the "Expedition Description" menu item under the "Status" pull down menu.
HOW TO MOVE THE PLAYING FIELD\n 1) Click the OK button on this dialog.\n 2) Make sure the mouse cursor is on the PLAYING FIELD (where the people, trees, lakes, etc., are)\n 3) Press and HOLD DOWN the RIGHT mouse button while MOVING the mouse. This type of movement is called "Turbo Scrolling".\n\nGo and try this SEVERAL times.
ANOTHER WAY TO MOVE THE PLAYING FIELD\n Using the map is a second way of looking at the different parts of the island. Bring up the map by clicking on the map icon (button) on the toolbar located at the TOP of the screen (just below the menus). The map icon is the only icon that is GREEN and YELLOW.\n Once you have the map, move the rectangle until it's where you want the screen to be. Then press the left mouse button.\n Try doing this now.
HOW TO SELECT A NAV (navigator)\n You can only select players on your own team (they are blue and are called navs). To move a nav you must first select him. Only one nav can be selected at a time and he has a white square around him. To select a nav:\n 1) First move the PLAYING FIELD until you can see some navs (you've just learned how to do this).\n 2) LEFT click on any nav. You'll know you've selected him when there is a white square around him.\n Go and do this.
FIRST WAY TO MOVE A NAV\n Move the mouse about 3 inches away from the selected nav (the one with the white square around him) and HOLD down the LEFT mouse button. The nav will start moving towards the mouse cursor.\n\nTry moving him 3 times.
HOW TO DIG\n Even though there is no buried treasure in this first expedition, let's learn how to dig up treasure. Any nav can dig but choose one that is on a meadow (a plain terrain square, i.e., no rivers, trees, bushes etc.,).\n 1) DOUBLE click with the LEFT button on that nav to bring up the CHANGE STANCE Dialog.\n 2) Push the dig button.\n 3) Click on YES for "Are you sure you want to dig here?" question.
Look at the above tool bar. On the middle to right side of it, it's says something like "37:100 Chester Nimitz(0) Active Groups:" The name is your selected person's name. The first number is his energy and the second is his combat strength (CS). When you form groups (you'll learn about that later) their numbers will appear after "Active Groups". The number inside the parentheses is the alert range value. Only navs have an alert range. Once you exit this dialog, if you move the mouse over anyone else you will also see that person's energy, combat strength, and name further to the right.\n The time (in minutes and seconds) to the left of the 1st name is increased when the game is NOT in pause mode.\n Now move mouse over several pirates and navs and observe their names, CS, and energy.
HOW TO BRING UP THE "COMMANDS" DIALOG\n Make sure the mouse is in the PLAYING FIELD and click the RIGHT button. This is the quickest way to pause the game. You'll want to pause the game whenever you want to stop the pirates from moving. The pirates will start moving again as soon as you start moving a nav or you click on the unpause button.\n Now 1) click the RIGHT mouse button to bring up the Commands dialog and then 2) click the pause button with the LEFT mouse button.
The amount of energy points both teams receive per minute has increased becuase of your team shrinking thru some of them being captured. This means your players will recover from being fatigued more quickly.\n This is done to keep the pace of the game the same (the fewer the number on your team, the more often you'll be moving them). For more info look up ENERGY in help.
This tutorial will last for the first few games of the season. It will teach you everything you need to now\n Welcome to the first game of the new Treasure Hunting season. There are 20 games in this season. This first game is an simple introductory game to help you learn some of the basic concepts of Treasure Island.\n Much effort has been put into making the help system effective. Be sure to press the HELP button on any dialog you don't understand.\n Your goal in this first game is to capture all of the pirates. There are 6 red pirates and you have 9 blue navs (navigators) on this small island. The pirates will be using simple tactics to make it easy for you. There s are no buried treasure chests in this first game. You have 5 minutes to win.\n If you win within 1 minute you receive a Gold Medal.\n If you win within 2 minutes you receive a Silver Medal.\n If you win within 5 minutes you receive a Bronze Medal.
Next, coach your team ONE person at a time. After coaching the first person the next person will automatically come up. Good coaching is crucial to developing a powerful team as the season progresses.
Treasure Island is a "Simultaneous" Strategy game. Both sides move at the same time, but they can only move one person at a time. You can pause or modify the game speed at anytime.\n A short while ago, while reading Robert Louis Stevenson s "Treasure Island", a dean at one of the nation's top business schools had the inspiration to start a new college sport to teach his students skills that are hard to learn in a classroom environment.\n The goal of the sport is to be the first team to get more than half the treasure chests buried on the island back to your ships. Conflicts are resolved with swordfights. The name of your team is navs (short for navigators) and your team color is blue. Your opponents are called pirates and their team color is red. There are 20 expeditions in this season. Each expedition has a different island, goals, and is played against a different team. Before each expedition you add an additional player and coach every player individually.\n
HOW TO DRAG YOUR NAVS:\n Often, this is the best way to move your navs!\n1) Move mouse over nav and press the left mouse button.\n2) Without letting up on the left mouse button, move (drag) the mouse cursor to where you want him to go. This works best if you quickly move the mouse cursor to where you want the nav to go and let the computer figure out the best way to get there.\n 3) Release button when "go" cursor is at destination.\n Try moving (dragging) him 3 times.
Great Job! Now you can go ahead and play the game.\n\n Remember the goal for this first (simple, no treasure chest) expedition is to capture all 6 of the red pirates.\n Tip, use 2 to 3 navs to attack a single pirate. Rotate between the navs until he is captured. Moving a nav onto a pirate will start an attack. Don't stop attacking that one pirate or else you'll let him regain his strength.
Welcome to the Treasure Island Tutorial. The initial tutorial dialogs consist of about 10 dialogs. These will help you learn the basic game controls. AFTER finishing the dialogs the game will start. Then, as you play the game a tutorial dialog will occasionally popup to explain some additional feature.\n The most common problem people have with this tutorial is that they press the WRONG mouse button. Be sure to press the correct LEFT or RIGHT mouse button.
The small green bar inside of the black rectangle to the left of each player shows the player's "Combat Strength" CS. This is the value used to determine the odds of winning. CS is a combination of the player's swordfighting, confidence, and teamspirit levels MULTIPLIED by their energy percentage.\n The taller the green bar, the greater the person's combat strength is.\n A player's combat strength shrinks as he becomes more tired (having less energy). Likewise, it increases as the player regains his energy.
Treasure Island is an "Simultaneous Strategy" game. That means the pirates are moving at the SAME time as you are. Both sides can move ONE player at a time.\n The pirates are moving anytime the game is not paused. You can tell when the game is paused by looking at the clock on the above toolbar. If it's not increasing, then the game is paused.
Expedition #4 BREAKNECK RACE!\n Wow, have to be fast, there's only one 1 buried treasure chest. If you win within 4 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 7 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 15 minutes a Bronze Cup.

Need to bring 3 out of the 5 buried treasure chests back to your ship to win. If you win within 7 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 10 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 20 minutes a Bronze Cup.
Expedition #6 JACKPOT!\n All 7 red X treasure markers are in the same general area! Need to bring 4 out of the 7 buried treasure chests back to your ship to win. It's going to be a wild melee! If you win within 9 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 14 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 24 minutes a Bronze Cup.
Expedition #7 SPIDER ISLAND\n There are NO red X Treasure markers on the MAP (that comes up when you press the map icon) but the red X Treasure markers are on the island itself. You'll have to go out and find them!\n Need to bring 5 out of the 9 buried treasure chests back to your ship to win. If you win within 11 minutes you'll receive a Gold Cup, within 18 minutes a Silver Cup, or within 30 minutes a Bronze Cup.

You've found the ONLY treasure chest by this red X treasure marker. You now need to carry the treasure chest back to your ship. Your ship is close to where your navs started and has blue flags. But watch out because:\n 1) Pirates will try to capture the treasure chest from you.\n 2) Nav carrying the treasure chest moves at half speed.\n 3) The nav gets tired at double the normal rate.\n 4) The nav defends at half his strength.
The next dialog will allow you to add mercenaries to your team by trading in one or more rubies. Only add mercenaries if you need them, otherwise save the rubies for another expedition. To get this dialog in the future click the "Add Mercenary" button on the above toolbar. Players can be added at ANY time as long as there are rubies.
Besides getting his confidence increased by 10 or 20 the player who deposits a treasure chest on a ship gets one of his skills increased by a value from 5 to 10.
The swordfight ended in a TIE. Both your nav and the pirate has lost some energy making them weaker. As they lose energy their stance will reflect it. If you don't move them for a while they will regain their energy and their stance will change also.
You WON the swordfight. The pirate was captured and will not return to his team until the next expedition. Your nav's confidence level was increased by 10. The red hat on the sword sticking in the ground marks the place where the pirate was captured.
You LOST the swordfight. Your nav was captured and will not return to his team until the next expedition. His confidence level will be reduced by 10. The blue hat on the sword sticking into the ground marks where he was captured.
If a player is NOT coachable or NOT self-motivated it's generally recommended that you first coach these areas.\n When the players ARE coachable and self-motivated your coaching has a 75%% of succeeding.
You can transfer the treasure chest from one nav to another by :\n 1) Moving the two navs next to each other.\n 2) Left click on the nav with the treasure chest.\n 3) Left click on the nav you want to transfer the treasure chest to.
You have selected a Fighter. He is you general purpose person. He's average in all areas. He's second best at swordfighting. He's tied for second best in speed, stamina, vision, and stealth.
You have selected a Runner. He has excellent speed and stamina. Average vision, stealth, and digging. And poor at swordfighting. He's excellent at getting to the treasure marker first and since he recovers his energy so quickly he's second best at digging. He's great at taking the treasure chest back to your ship. Even though he's poor at fighting it's good to use him to wear down pirates that are not too much stronger than he is since he can quickly recover his energy. His outstanding speed makes him the best at running down pirates who are retreating and also at evading stronger pirates.
You have selected a Scout. He is excellent at vision and stealth. Average at speed, stamina, and digging. And poor at swordfighting. Great for giving early warning about advancing pirates.
You have selected a swordman. He is excellent at swordfighting. Average at vision and stealth. And poor at speed and stamina. He's awesome at combat but use him sparingly since it takes him the longest to recover his energy.
You have selected a trapper. He is excellent at digging. He is average at stamina. And he is poor at speed, swordfighting, vision, and stealth. He's by far the best person for digging up treasure chests because of his speed and how little energy it takes him to dig them up.
Before each expedition you add one new player to your team. On the next dialog you'll pick that player.\n Picking a fighter is a good choice for beginners.
Before each expedition you coach EACH player in an attempt to improve one of their skills. On the next dialog you'll begin to do this coaching.\n Coaching Swordfighting or Stamina is general a good thing for beginners to do.
Moving your navs as a group is VERY important. After this dialog, the help system Group Move section will be displayed. After reading the section, select about 6 navs in a group to go after the middle red X treasure marker.

To attack a MOVING pirate (so that you can swordfight him) you need to move into the location (square) the pirate is moving INTO, NOT into the location the pirate is moving FROM.
If you want, you can transfer the treasure chest to someone who is not as tired. Just move the two navs next to each other. Then LEFT click on the nav with the treasure chest. Then LEFT click on the nav you want to carry the treasure chest.
"Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" Revelation chapter 5 verse 13
Generally, it s best to attack with "Aggressive: Try to Capture Pirate" when your odds of winning swordfights (the number at the top of the dialog) get up to someplace in the 65%% to 80%% range. That way, you don t wear out your team with too many "Cautious: Make Pirate Tired" attacks.
